When we talk of Lord Jagannath, the first thing that comes to our mind is the Puri Rath Yatra, the Chariot / Car Festival of Lord Jagannath taking place in Puri, Orissa.
The Rath Yatra or the Chariot / Car Festival of Lord Jagannath not only takes place in Puri. It also takes place in other parts of India and outside India as well.
One such Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath takes place in Bangladesh. It is known as the Dhamrai Rath Yatra taking place in Dhamrai, a Upazila of Dhaka District in Bangladesh.
The annual Jagannath Rath Jatra in Dhamrai is a famous Hindu festival in Bangladesh, attracting thousands of people in the predominantly Muslim dominated country.
History of Dhamrai Rath Yatra in Bangladesh :
The Dhamrai Rath Yatra (Bengali: ধামরাই জগন্নাথ রথ) is a 400 year old tradition, dating back to around 1672 AD when a Bamboo-made Rath was used. It was later replaced by a wooden chariot which was 60 feet in height, 45 feet in width and was 3 storied structure having 32 giant wooden wheels. It was adorned with two wooden horses in front as well as carvings and paintings of Hindu deities.
Thick ropes made with about 1000 kilograms of jute fiber were used to pull the Rath along.
However the chariot was burnt down by the Pakistani army during the Bangladesh war of Liberation. A makeshift chariot was built with bamboos in the consequent year to continue with the tradition.
In the year 2006 Mrs. Bina Sikri, the then Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh pledged to provide financial assistance in building a new Rath. Consequently, a 27 feet long, 45 feed wide and 3-storied Rath, having 15 wheels was built in 2010.
Dhamrai Rath Yatra Route :
During the Dhamrai Rath Yatra, the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balarama and Subhadra travel from the Madhabbari Temple to the Gope Nagar Temple, regarded to be the In-Laws house, a distance of about half a kilometer away.
Here they stay for a week and they return back to the Madhabbari Temple, the return journey known as “Ulto Rath Yatra” (Bengali: উলটো রথ).
