Lord Jagannath meaning “Lord of the Universe” is a deity worshipped by Hindus mainly in Indian states of Gujarat, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Assam, Manipur and Tripura. He is also worshipped by Hindu’s located in Bangladesh and other parts of the world.
Lord Jagannath is one of the most famous manifestations of Lord Vishnu. Some devotees believe that he is one of the forms lo Lord Krishna (Avatar of Lord Vishnu).
The idol of Lord Jagannath is a carved and decorated wooden stump with large round eyes and with stumps as hands, with the conspicuous absence of legs.
Lord Jagannath is worshipped as a part of a triad on a jewelled platform (Ratnavedi) with his elder brother Lord Balabhadra, younger sister Subhadra.
Lord Jagannath is Black in color, Lord Balabhadra is white in color, while sister Subhadra is yellow in color.
If you closely watch the idol of Lord Jagannath you will find that his hands are parallel which shows his willing to embrace all his devotees and his eyes are big and round without any eye lids which signifies that he is always looking after the welfare of his devotees without any sleep.
There are references to Lord Jagannath in many notable works of Hindu mythology like the Skanda, Brahma, Narada and Padma Puranas.
Lord Jagannath Temple in Puri :
The oldest and the most famous temple of Lords Jagannath is located in Puri, Orissa.
Every year, millions of devotees of Lord jagannath visit this temple, especially during the Rath Yatra Festival, which occurs every year in the Hindu calendar month of Ashad (falling in June – July Period)
The Lord Jagannath Temple in Puri is regarded as one of the Char Dham (sacred Hindu pilgrimage places) in India.
